Summer Reading Challenge

Summer FB cover3

The summer reading challenge is here!

What is the summer reading challenge?
The summer reading challenge is a season of literacy for Ouachita Parish. The library encourages everyone to read as much as they can this summer, and participate in fun programs and challenges surrounding a theme. If you complete the challenge, you will be eligible to win amazing prizes.

Who can participate in the summer reading challenge?
Anyone with a library card! The summer reading challenge is divided into three age groups: adults, teens, and children. Even children who can't read yet can participate by counting books that are read to them, and by participating in the challenges.

How do I register?
You can register in person at any branch, or online for adultsteens, and children.

What is the theme for the summer reading challenge?
The 2019 summer reading challenge theme is "A Universe of Stories." We will be celebrating all things space, all summer long, in honor of the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. From Star Wars to NASA, get ready to blast off to an out-of-this-world summer.

What are the challenges and how do I earn prizes?
Earn prizes for:

Reading. You will earn a prize for every page benchmark level you complete, up to three prizes (250, 500, and 750 pages for kids; 500, 1000, and 1500 pages for teens and adults). Additionally, children will be entered into a grand prize drawing (bicycles, gift cards, etc.) for every 750 pages they read and log. Likewise, teens and adults will be entered into a grand prize drawing (tablet, gift cards, etc.) for every 1500 pages they read and log.

Top 6 Picks. While you can read any book during the summer reading challenge, our librarians have selected six titles in each age group that highlight "A Universe of Stories." If adults and teens read at least two of these titles and vote for your favorite as the Ouachita Readers' Choice, they will have an additional entry into the grand prize drawing.

Completing challenges. You will earn a prize for completing each of the three challenges, up to three prizes. To complete a challenge, finish five tasks within each challenge. You can complete tasks in any combination. For example, you can complete all five individual tasks, or one individual task five different times. Additionally, if you complete all three challenges (be a star at HOME, at your LIBRARY, and in the COMMUNITY), you will have another entry into the grand prize drawing.
